After posting the information of so called $10 laptop in my previous post and now the details (??) have come out via Times of India that mentions the following,

“ The so-called laptop actually turned out to be a storage device containing megabytes of data info which can be accessed by a user by connecting this device to a laptop. It meant that unlike the internet, this device can display that information that has already been stored.”

  This is really a shame for people who have so aggressively made the world believe that they are actually unveiling a laptop.  This looks nothing but a USB drive hopefully capable of some computing itself.

Not sure what the guys in IIT, Vellore University and IISc thought when they publicised this as a laptop. 

This looks nothing but a pre-election gimmick done by government to woo the mass people who have little idea about IT !

India today unveiled the ‘world’s cheapest laptop’ priced somewhere between $10 – $20.  This will be named ‘Sakshat’ and will be available for $10 after 6 months when it goes into into mass production.  This is invented jointly by Government of India (Education ministry), IISc Bangalore & IIT Chennai.  This will have Linux OS, 2GB memory, Wi-fi & Ethernet connection and is primarily aimed at rural education upbringing and students across the country for education purposes.

If you want to know more of the same, just search the keyword “India $10 laptop” in Google news section and you would know latest info on the same.  No official pictures or specs are out as yet though ..

Will this be a success and a reality? Only the time will tell, especially when the much publicised $100 laptop scheme has missed the mark !
