Project Natal – now this is something cool !
0Ok, just had a look at the Youtube video of Project Natal from Microsoft Gaming which, hopefully and in all probability would destroy the future of Nintendo Wii if its launched today !
The stuff mentioned there is too good to believe and only thing that possibly could deter gaming people not to buy would be a price tag.. !!
Until we get more details on this, go over this Youtube Video and check it out yourself.
The full body motion sensing with face & movement recognition is a fantastic thing and you could use your fully body to play games or interact with the device.
Now I just can not wait to get my hands on this tool when it launches. Hope it lives up to its expectations and of course the manageable price tag !
I am a Bing’er today !
0Wow !
Microsoft has launched the new search engine .. … err … sorry decision engine called ‘Bing’ today and have been using it since morning for doing various searches.
I just hope this is a start of what they intend to achieve in revamping the search engine and make it more useful and add more intelligence into the results.
I liked Google and of course everyone likes Google. But I love trying out new things and was kinda bored with Google because it did not have any credible alternative. Google always gave me perfect results each time, every time and resolved my purpose which neither Yahoo nor the Live search engine could do consistently over a period of time. So, when I actually started using Bing, I was little bit apprehensive about the usefulness over Google.
Using it from UK, I observed that the product search goes to CIAO which is a plus point as on the same page it gives the reviews of the products as well. It certainly helps to get the reviews up on quickly so as to decide whether the product is worth pursuing further or not.
What I especially liked, and probably scores over Google, was the image search. The way the search results are presented was really cool. So rather than navigating to multiple pages, I could simply scroll down and the more I scroll down, the more results it would load on the same page. Kind of cool concept !
It also gave useful information about the images as well as various options to filter my results. It was certainly helpful.
I could not stop myself from doing a quick comparison with Google results for my own blog and Bing did show my blog results quick enough. Live search never indexed my blog apparently so never could get results there. So it was a good improvement there … !! In few of the searches, I found Google giving latest results while in few other I could Bing giving better results so it really depends on what you want to search.
Apparently, bing’s meaning is But Its Not Google !
I liked Bing from what I used today and I intend to use it for everyday use henceforth. Of course, that does not mean I would abandon using Google !!
Anyways, if you intend to read Microsoft announcement over Bing, jump over here.
Beambox Evolution R1 Pico projector – My experience & review
2In recent times, there have been lot of Pico projectors coming up in the market and I did a research before actually zeroing on buying the Beambox Evolution R1 (would henceforth mention as BBER1) out of the lot.
I did buy the product directly from www.beambox.co.uk website and the product arrived 2 days after I put the order through. The product cost me approx £280 GBP including delivery.
There are quite a few competitors in the market of Pico Projectors and most notably Optoma Pico Projector, 3M MPro 110 Pico Projector & Aiptek Pocket Cinema are more prominent alternatives to the BBER1 in the market.
Few things I essentially wanted in my Pico projector when I did the research were,
-
Ability to run on the battery for a good period
-
Of course, the ability to run on power
-
Ability to handle SD / MMC Cards and USB Flash drives
-
In-built media player that supports various codecs
-
A good lumens power that would not require a pitch dark room !
-
Decent looks and control buttons & Preferably a remote control
Unfortunately none of the above mentioned pocket projectors ticked all the boxes that I expected from my projector, but honestly, specification wise BBER1 came closest of them.
ou can view plenty of images of BBER1 on internet yourself and get a feel of how it would look. The iPod type navigation control certainly is good enough and works well when you navigate through the menus.
BBER1, as per specifications should run for approx 90 mins on battery, but during my test it could stretch up to about 65 minutes so well short of the expected outcome there.
The in-built media player have Video, Audio, Pictures & file management options and certainly works well. Supports forward, rewind, pause functions while watching the videos. You have to press the PLAY button for 2-3 seconds to start up the media player and similarly to shut it down once you are done with your watching.
There is no remote control, so that was a negative point in my eyes. A remote control would certainly have helped a lot while watching the movies as I had actually get up and use the controls on the projector manually if I had to take a break from watching the movie.
The Lumens power is about 3 times better than rest of the competition (The three I mentioned above are about 10 lumens, whilst BBER1 claims 30 lumens). In the daylight, its absolutely impossible to watch anything on your wall, but the movies are watchable in 70% dark room. Its obvious that the more you go back from your projection wall, the lighter & darker the picture will be. So if you really want to enjoy the full big screen movies, you better arrange for a dark room yourselves. Anyways, I watched the movies in about 90% dark room and I could stretch the image up to 65 inches before it actually started fading out.
The colours were good but as I said, the longer you keep it from the projection wall the darker the colours would be. The contrast ration is claimed about 200:1 but in real time, I do not think I could have actually measured it that way. Some of the videos looked darker to me overall.
The BBER1 comes with an in-built memory of 1 GB, although the user available memory is about 800 MB and rest of it goes for ROM etc. There is a slot for MicroSD card which could take up to 4GB of memory. So you could actually copy your movies on your MicroSD card and watch it straight away with the in-build media player.
The AV in is the only video input source so unless your Laptop has a TV out and you buy a separate S-Video or VGA to AV Adapter, you are unlikely to connect to your laptop. Unfortunately the laptops I have did not have the TV out capability, so I had to buy a VGA to Component adapter separately, costing about £40.
The output resolution is 640×480 which is good enough to view SD movies. I tried connecting from my Nokia N95 to Pico projector and watch the movies, but in few of them I observed stretched images. Probably this was obvious as the Nokia N95 outputs on QVGA format.
The audio outcome is not great, but OK enough if you do not have any alternative. Certainly loud enough to hear clearly in a silent room and the Headphone jack (3.5 mm) certainly helps if you would want to connect it to your home theatre system for a better sound.
You can also view pictures using the in-built player and it has got a slide show mode which you could use to keep yourself hands free whilst watching the show.
Conclusion
Overall I am satisfied with my purchase, but honestly, it could have been better. Especially, I would have liked to have a remote control for operating it sitting on my sofa. The lumens capability is certainly best amongst the existing lot but there are already products being launched with 100 lumens power so Beambox better watch out.
The price is on a higher side compared to the competition. The feel in hands is good the iPod style control pad works perfectly.
So, if you really want to buy a Pico projector, for style, for fun then I would recommend you take a look at BBER1 here.
Overall I would rate this product at about 7.5 / 10.
The marks have been cut because of remote control, no laptop direct connectivity, limited SD support (only up to 4 GB) and of course the resolution, which should at least have been WVGA.
Hopefully this helps. If you have any comments on my review or want to know more, please contact me by commenting on my blog.

Technology for business .. or vice versa?
0This is the post I recollected from my very very early days of blogging (read year 2003) and was in response to one of the debates we had in our group of office colleagues.
I guess pretty much I said that time about 6 years ago looks rubbish to me now anyways .. however I guess there are still a few valid points
So here is how I went on my old blog.
Technology for Business
Some Cons against "Technology for Experiment" ….
- Industry is never driven by only "Technology". The needs of the business generates the need for "Technology". So, lets first identify the facts of business, so called " Business Verticals" and divide the tasks for those verticals rather than the "Technology Horizontals".
- The industry is continuously changing, becoming more cautious about the spending and cost/benefit analysis for the organizations.
- The time has gone when the companies use to spend lots n lots of dollars just to change the look n feel of some of their useless sites just for the sake of "New Technology Adoption".
- The expectations of the business from the IT companies have grown up to very high standards because of very competitive market and clear division of the market on the basis of the "Business Verticals".
- Technology is a "Short Living" thing. On an average a technology becomes old within first 3 months of its origin.
- The real challenge lies in "Foresight" predicting the way the IT will go in next say 5-10 years and act accordingly.
- Only "Technology" really lacks in attracting more business now a days. e.g. A "beverage" organization will think twice before implement an XML standard even if you have done some significant work for some "finance sector" client, but on the other hand if we stick to the vertical then its not a big deal to attract more and more clients, at least through something called "Domain Experience".
- The market is globally getting very tough and only the "Survival of the Fittest" is the only thing that is fact.
- Admit the fact that a company can not compete and win a project against another one who is working in a particular domain for say last 5 years. e.g. Company A is technically very very sound. Company B is comparatively not so much but company B is very strong in its (say) Finance domain and working for it since last 5-6 years. Both are bidding for a Finance client…… you are intelligent enough to guess who is the ultimate winner.
- Finally if you feel we are not intelligent enough to judge the battle. Look for the giants like "SAP", "Microsoft", "IBM" are doing to their products. Every giant has a product for a business verticals and virtually admitting that the industry is getting split vertically.
Some Pros for the "Technology" ..
- Technology keeps the industry live.
- Despite of various things it is still a fact that over 100 companies are still alive only because someone like Microsoft or IBM are developing more technologies and relative products.
- Technology keeps your knowledge grow at a fast pace (I have used a word Knowledge and that does not mean Business).
- Finally Its really a fun learning new technologies…..
Might have been an interesting debate really. Do not recollect enough as to what made me write this but looking at this … must have been a fun !
