How do you define leadership ?
7Last 4 days, I was fortunate to be part of the ‘Leadership Management Workshop’ and I must acknowledge these days have been an exhilarating, self realizing & self discovering experience.
Being in Amdocs, a company that really makes an effort of developing leadership through specialized programmes such as this one, has been of immense value to me over last 6 months as I am able to get into lot of such workshops / trainings to enhance myself.
Coming back to the workshop that was conducted by Raj Mali, who calls him self a corporate mystic, was conducted over a period of 4 days and had several engaging discussions that ultimately led to the group understanding the secrets of successful corporate leadership.
Its do have lots to write about the experience of last 4 days and I would be genuinely attempting to write few articles on my experience of last 4 days and how I have grasped, understood and learnt few things. This is obviously the first attempt to start a series of the discussions on the topic of ‘Leadership’.
Our training group of 10 was consisted of managers across various competency centres of Amdocs, some of us were new and coming from other organizations and few of them were veterans who are with the company for close to 10 years or so, thus making it one of the more diverse forums and at the same time, an interesting one.
The common pattern of the last 4 days was consistent. More focus was given on group discussions, observations, role plays and games. It was so surprising that the amount multimedia that was involved was very less. More details on the same, with genuine hope, I will be able to post in coming days on my blog.
In this article, I want to reflect on the very first topic that we discussed in the programme and that was a simple question,
“What do you think leadership means to you?”
On the face value of the question, it looks very simple to everyone, however what surprised me and probably others was that when this was thrown at us, we had really take a pause and think, what it really means?
Few interesting answers that came out of the discussion were,
- Leadership is all about getting things done on time within budget & costs
- Leadership means helping your team grow
- Its about people management
- Its about how you handle issues and the pressure cooker situations
- Leadership is how you motivate people to do their jobs
- Leadership is about managing the work and team
- Leadership is controlling the behaviour and emotions of self and influencing in others
- Leadership is all about setting the rules and helping the followers follow them !
and the answer I gave was “Leadership is all about taking risks and making key decisions that help you grow your team”.
However, after the session is now complete, what I have understood about leadership is as follows,
Leadership is not a science, its an art.
Its an art on how you understand the mindset of individuals as well as groups, connect with people of various styles and patterns and still form a successful team and achieve a common goal of growth & success. However, none of the above is possible, without yourself making a conscious effort to understand yourself, your own emotions and learn to control and channelize them to create positive energy around.
Leadership is demonstrated by various people and they have unique style of executing leadership within the group. Raj, very effectively classifies all the styles into 4 simple categories and had easily explained them through two games, one group and other pair.
I would like to mention about the games in next article, however, till then, I would like to know your view on what you perceive leadership as and if you have to define, how would be defining the same?

Team work !
0Team work is an important aspect of high performing and successful teams and its all the more important to to achieve it consistently.
In my new project since I took over, I have been trying to instil the feeling of one team as a one large family. Prior to me taking over the project has been consisting of several teams bound by scope, processes & and more notably (in my view) the excuses!
Thus when I took over the project, one of the challenges that was put in front of me was to break the moulds and recede the boundaries to create a more cohesive unit and turn that unit into a high performing team.
I have taken the challenge and have started working towards it. How much success I would get, would really be visible in coming months but few visible differences have started to come along the way and most notably people have started to notice the difference in the team. Hopefully this is a good sign for coming times.
One of the very old videos that used to be on “Doordarshan” is very apt to display the power of togetherness & team work which I would like to embed here in my post.
The video was apparently created in 1985 when the colour television was relatively new in India.
The video is in Hindi language and it simply tells you how powerful the teamwork could be if all the team members have same heart beat !
HeartQuotes website mentions a very good collection of quotes on Team Work and few of my favourite quotes are as follows.
It is amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.
Teamwork: Simply stated, it is less me and more we.
Henry Ford
Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.

A quick reflection on the India Elections and expectations from new Government !
0So the elections in India are over and we know officially that the Congress led Government is on the cards. Not a much change as such for common people but I have been pleasantly surprised by the way the common people in India have voted in favour of one party. This is something I think has not happened since a long time and is definitely a welcome change !
Although I have been away from India for a great part of last 5 years of the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) rule in India, but whenever I have been, I was probably impressed by the progress work done by them, particularly in the Delhi area where I was the most frequent visitor. The region has definitely progressed well on infrastructure front, but I think few things that the new Government needs to ponder, in my opinion are,
-
Robust internal security Plan - After what happened in Mumbai, definitely the Indians are in no mood to have another episode of such terrorist mayhem. Although the previous Government in power (UPA only) had formed something called NIA (National Investigation Agency) which is a national level security agency. It is still unknown what is the structure of the NIA and what procedures & powers are given to the country’s elite force (expected to be).
-
Economic reforms / development – Although the infrastructure upgrades have been planned well since the times of Vajpayee Government but this government is expected, now since they are on their own, to carry them forward with a rapid pace. The massive projects like national highways development, golden quadrilateral, river-interlinking were started during the BJP government should be taken forward with a purpose and be completed to assist the development of the country.
-
IT & Telecommunications – Although India has long been pressing its position as a leader in “providing” IT Services to the world, its about time we start “consuming” these services within to strengthen the IT & Communication infrastructure in the country. Its such a shame that 3G network is introduced only few weeks ago in India and the average broadband speeds in India are ranked 115th in the world ! The Government & the IT ministry should be really focussing on how to improve the infrastructure and making the high end technology available to the public at affordable rates.
-
Better civilization & public rights – Although RTI (Right to Information) has gone a long way in giving the public a right to know what is happening with respect to various public / personal issues managed within Government, I guess India is still divided over several issues such as castes systems, religion & regionalism. The Women in average Indian society still do not have equal rights as Men and this is really sad to be seen in the 21st century. The Government needs to step up and create laws that would allow equal rights to all Indians irrespective of Caste, Religion or Region. Check out my extended thoughts on this on my blog post on Protectionism & Economy.
-
Promote entrepreneurship – Not only in the IT, but the entrepreneurship should be promoted across various sectors. We need innovative solutions that would resolve practical problems such as shortage of electricity, water, food etc., we need young Indians to come forward & get into entrepreneurship. Do you still remember the person who supposedly developed the petrol using tree leaves ! What happened to him and his project? And remember project Rainbow that used paper to store Terabytes of data ! What about ‘Sakshat’, the $10 laptop? We need more entrepreneurs to come forward and lead India into the new century. Read my thoughts on entrepreneurship in India & education system here.
-
Reform the education system – The current education system needs reforms to allow innovation rather than follow up! We need innovative methods of education rather than reading and mugging up the books, which, in practical life are of little or no use !! Read more here..
Well, these are few thoughts I could jot down. Might be many more, but your comments are always welcome. Do leave your comment if you could spare few seconds.
Thanks & more later !

Technology future 2019 – through Microsoft’s eyes !
1Check out this video from Microsoft about their Microsoft Office Labs Vision 2019. This is nothing short of awesome !
If this will be a reality, I would like to live in the one now !
There is a full 5 minute version available on istartedsomething.com and I guess the author there has mentioned his favourites (which I agree too) and they include a “transparent wall” between two classrooms around the world (US & India), animated drawings and rendering, realtime conversation translations (Shown as Hindi & English), surface displays (which is a reality now), electronic boarding cards, transparent displays, mini projectors among many others.
Electronic newspaper is really good and probably coolest of all.
A full presentation is also available on the Microsoft’s website here
