Final guide to accessing Vodafone Live! on HTC Touch HD

6

touchhd I posted earlier about how to access the Mobile TV on HTC Touch HD on my blog here. But later I found out that method as an inadequate one to continue in normal usage.  So I did some more R&D at home around this and found the perfect method of doing so !

So here you go now.

My HTC Touch HD has, L26 v9.0 WWE ROM and you need following software before proceeding further.

  • AdvancedConfig – for doing the configuration changes on Internet Explorer User agent
  • PHM registry editor – for making the changes to rtsp default player

Vodafone Live! runs primarily on S60 based devices and I had an excellent experience of it running on my earlier Nokia N95. So you need to try and ‘fool’ the system at Vodafone to assume your phone as a N95 instead of Internet Explorer running on a Windows Mobile phone. To do so, you need to change the ‘mobile’ user agent string of your Internet Explore browser to the one used for N95.  Use the following steps to change the user agent string.

  1. Run AdvancedConfig
  2. Expand Internet Explorer option
  3. Click on User Agent custom base
  4. Change the value as follows

    Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaN95/11.0.026; Profile MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413

Once you are done with this, to ensure that the change has worked, Open the internet explorer browser and go to the website http://www.useragentstring.com. Your browser should recognize your device as N95 using Mozilla Safari browser.

If this happens, then you have passed the first step!

Now go to Start –> Settings –> Connections –> Connections –> Advanced –> Select networks

Select “Contract WAP” as the default network and you are good to go.

Just to test if this works.. try accessing http://live.vodafone.co.uk via your Internet Explorer browser (in a Mobile mode, not Desktop mode) and see if it works for you.

It worked for me and I hope it would work for you.

However, I had one issue with HTC Streaming Media that the rtsp link would not play. Hence I had to go and change the default RTSP player to WMPlayer.exe by modifying the registry.

If you too are having similar issue, then open PHM registry editor and access the key HKCRrtspShellOpenCommand.  Change the default value from StreamingPlayer.exe to WMPlayer.exe “%1” and you should be able to view the streaming from your Windows Media player.

Try the above steps and let me know how it goes…

Thanks

This is a old document and the steps mentioned here may not work for everyone. For latest version of instructions to access Vodafone Live!, please visit the link here

Hey .. finally managed to get this working on my HTC Touch HD. Not sure if this solution will continue to work forever or not, but just wanted to try something and actually it worked.

So here is what I did,

1. Connected to Vodafone Live! using my Nokia N95 and browsed the Sky Sports News channel

2. Waited for it to load in my Real Player

3. Stopped the real player and checked the properties and copied the RTSP URL

4. Noted the URL on my laptop and shut down my N95, transferred my Vodafone SIM card to the HTC Touch HD

5. Started the Touch HD mobile

6. Opened the HTC streaming software

7. Change the default connection point to “Contract WAP”

8. Enter the URL you copied from N95 in there and CONNECT !

The URL will be something like below,

rtsp://stream.vodafone.co.uk/LV/LV01/live/vf-stream-t-<STREAMID>.sdp?opcoid=1&plan=P&msisdn=<YOURMOBILENUMBERSTARTINGWITH447>&transid=
1&serviceId=dummy&loginterval=60&iver=3&gtime=gtime=<XXXXXXXXXX>

It works, and you can see the photo below !

Try yourself and let me know your comments on this.

I have just tried this and it worked for me. Not sure if the same URL will work tomorrow or not but its worth trying.

Cheers !

Hotmail goes pop3 ! – Your POP3 & SMTP settings for hotmail & windows live services

2

I have been waiting for this to happen since quite a while and I guess the sanity prevailed at Microsoft and they have opened up the POP3 access to its Live email services. So effectively, you could now access the hotmail emails using your own favourite email client.

Yes, that includes Thunderbird too !

So here you go. The settings are as follows,

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

I came across this while I was trying to configure the hotmail on my Windows Mobile handset so I could keep in touch regularly over the personal emails too.

Trying out Microsoft Tag for my blog

0

Today, I have quick tried my hands on the Microsoft Tag reader software. Installed it via Microsoft site on my Touch HD and subscribed via internet to create a tag for my site.

Microsoft_Tag_Sollerthoughtscouk You will see the actual tag on the right hand side bar at the bottom. The software is really good but remains to be seen what you can use it for really.

To get more info on that, visit Microsoft’s site here.  So, now I can say that I am tagged !

Ideal windows phone design .. dual slide out mobile?

1

I have been thinking recently about a phone that has dual slide keyboard horizontal as well vertical. I am not a mobile phone designer and I do not know how I can actually design this properly using an appropriate tool, but here is my vision (though vague) and I tried to show it via a simple Power point tool.

The coolest part of this will be the dual slide out keyboard that you can use as per your needs. The vertical slide down will give you normal number pad and T9 input. The slide left will pop out a full QWERTY keyboard with the landscape mode on the screen.

IdealMobileDesign

I love Windows Phone (aka Windows mobile) so I would like to see this to be the windows mobile phone :-)   Also, I do not know how this will work out in terms of actual design, but I would absolutely love this kind of design if at all it comes to the market.

Let me know what you think of this? Do you find this cool or .. absolutely useless?
